DEADLINE: August 18, 2017 11:59 pm EST
BUDGET: $3,000 Artist fee, plus $1000 for materials

Arts Excursions Unlimited is seeking two visual, literary, or performing artists to develop a three-month workshop that engages residents of the greater Hazelwood community.  Artists are expected to be present in the community for at least 8 - 10 hours a week for three months.  At the end of the workshop, artists and community members present their project.  The content, form, and direction of the project is developed by the artist in collaboration with residents.

Arts Excursions Unlimited (AEU) is the result of a year long residency at the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh - Hazelwood under the Office of Public Art Residency program. Artist Edith Abeyta worked with Hazelwood residents to develop a creative project based on a year's worth of one on one conversations, group discussions, art activities, and numerous meetings.

AEU provides free monthly arts and cultural visits to various locations throughout the Pittsburgh region. The focus is on family outings. The participants range in age from 2-82. The project’s aim is to foster communal arts experiences as well as personal growth and greater connections to the neighborhood, city, state, country, and world, maintaining that direct interactions with the arts makes for a better understanding of the self and the spaces we inhabit.

Edith Abeyta is the founder and lead artist of Arts Excursions Unlimited. She will serve as a liaison, advisor, and assist when necessary in facilitating the activities of the Workshop Artist. Because she has been working in Greater Hazelwood since June 2014 she is able to quickly connect the Workshop Artist to residents, community leaders, organizations, and sites. Her main role is to continue to administer and  produce monthly arts and cultural excursions, resident determined creative activities, and facilitate the Satellite Studio.

The Workshop Artist is responsible for identifying, implementing, and documenting a creative project with Greater Hazelwood residents. This project should reflect the interest of the residents as well as include creative collaboration and participation. The creative project should contribute to and foster resident agency.

There are two sessions available.  November 1, 2017 - January 31, 2018 and  March 1 - May 30,  2018.

There are two work sites available to the Workshop Artist. The first is the Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh - Hazelwood. The hours at the library are Monday, Friday, and Saturday, 10:00am to 5:00pm and Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday, 10:00am to 8:00pm. The second site is the Satellite Studio at 134 E. Elizabeth Street just a few blocks away from the library. The workshop artist is encouraged to utilize both sites particularly during the time when youth residents are out of school.

The artist fee is $3000 payable in $1000 installments once a month for three months. Up to $1000 is available to purchase equipment, supplies, and materials to produce creative activities with Hazelwood residents. All purchases remain property of Arts Excursions Unlimited.
